WHO ARE WE

CCE Logo Compact JPEG.JPG

The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) promotes civic engagement and service-learning opportunities for the entire Southern Miss campus community. Through partnerships with faculty, staff, students, and over 100 community agencies, CCE facilitates activities that integrate learning, service, and leadership to empower students to become global leaders.

The Center’s mission is to coordinate meaningful and mutually beneficial community engagement experiences to address university and community needs, affect positive social change, and cultivate active citizen leaders. Each year the office documents approximately 100,000 hours of community service by Southern Miss students, with almost half of those hours performed by individuals at one location throughout the year. USM’s overall service hours have an economic value of more than $2 million

Recognized with the prestigious Carnegie Community Engagement classification, Southern Miss continues its commitment to cultivate and sustain stronger communities through the work of the CCE. Students who participate in CCE opportunities:

  • Become immersed in other cultures to expand their understanding of an ever-changing world.

  • Learn about the challenges that different communities face and identify ways to be part of the solution.

  • Build relationships with community partners and the people they serve.

WHAT ARE ALTERNATIVE SERVICE BREAKS?

Alternative Service Break (ASB) trips provide USM students with a low-cost alternative to the traditional Fall, Spring, and Summer breaks and offer an opportunity to travel to a different region, perform meaningful service, and explore an area’s culture and history. Service activities are combined with reflection and education that challenge students to develop the leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills necessary to become real advocates of change.
